Knowledge CentreBlogging For BusinessThe blog was not originally intended as a means to promote a business, service, or other website. It was originally meant for individuals to post their personal thoughts and rants.. However, businesses that have taken advantage of this unique concept have shown excellent results in driving traffic and using blog content to help convert sales. Creating a blog and occasionally posting a few lines is not enough to convert your blog into a powerhouse advertising avenue, though. A blog can be used not only to direct traffic to your site, but it can be used to represent you and your business to visitors you do receive. It can help to identify you as an authoritative person on a given topic, subsequently improving your image and increasing site conversions. It can also be used to provide your visitors with more information on a topic without having to direct them away from your pages. Promoting a blog offers something of a catch-22 situation, though. The more popular your blog, the more likely it will be read and commented on by others. Regular, Quality ContentThe single most important aspect of building a busy blog is to regularly post high quality content. While this alone may not generate a lot of traffic, eventually and even without any promotional work, you are likely to still gain some search engine traffic from the organic placement of natural keywords. The most popular blogs are those that are filled with insightful posts. Readers are more inclined to comment on these posts, getting them actively involved in the blog. This, in turn, means they are more likely to return to the posts to see if any further comment has been made. Visitors are also more likely to subscribe to your blog in order to receive updates. However, many subscribers will cancel if they do not receive regular updates of freshly added content. Links To And From Your Main SiteEvery page, or at least the majority of the most important pages, of your website should link to a post or category on your blog. This will provide your blog with much needed incoming links to help improve search engine rankings and encourage your site visitors to comment on your blog. In order to take advantage of the traffic your blog does gain you need to direct visitors to your website. This can be done using advertising banners and links on the main pages of your blog, in sidebars, and in the context of your blog posts. Only link to related pages, and try to link to the most relevant page. Not all blog posts will demand a link directly to a sales page, and interested visitors are more likely to want to see more information about your products, services, or website. RSS Feeds And SubscribersProducing high quality content, added regularly to your site, you will begin to build interest from visitors. As well as offering them links to relevant pages of your site, you should bear in mind that not everybody will want to take that step immediately. Blogs should offer a number of methods to subscribe. The most common of these methods is using RSS feeds, although you may also consider offering email subscriptions and bookmarking buttons. The more often a person visitors your blog or website, the more likely they are to become a customer. By providing regular content and a method of being automatically informed when new content is added, you are increasing the chances of making conversions from blog readers. Social Bookmarking And NetworkingThe blogosphere revolves around social networking. Many social media websites have been established that can be used to promote your blog content. Digg is an extremely popular social news site that can generate excellent amounts of traffic to a blog in a very short space of time. Add Digg It and other social bookmarking buttons to your posts so that your readers can actively promote your blog for you. A number of services enable you to ping them when you have updated your blog. They then publish your updated posts and subsequently drive traffic to your site. A lot of pinging services offer automatic methods of doing this but find the most relevant to the topic of your site and manually ping them on a daily basis. Search Engine Optimised PostsBlog posts need to read naturally and not as though they have been written for the benefit of search engines. However, it is possible to inject a few keywords and you should attempt to build incoming links using these keywords as anchor text. Also add the relevant meta tags to ensure that the remaining meta search engines are positioned to index and rank your site. Why Blog? The blog has become more than a tool for social interaction. Advertisers, marketers, and website owners have learned that they can be used to promote their website and generate very good levels of targeted, and even pre-sold traffic. In order to take advantage of this you need to create a blog, post regular and high-quality information. You can also optimise posts for the benefit of search engines and even use your visitors to help promote the blog. © 2008. This content is the property of Fresh Enterprise Limited.
