Definition of Security / Patching

Patching refers to the process of placing a patch in order to repair a problem with a computer program. In many cases, patching is done to protect the security of a computer system and to safeguard it from the imminent danger of viruses, malware, and PC bugs. The security of a computer is severely placed at risk whenever it is attacked by Trojans, viruses, and other forms of spyware and malware.

In other cases, patches are required to replace bad graphics or to improve the performance or usability of a specific program. Additionally, some patches are simply designed to provide an important upgrade to a particular software program. Large patches or those that incorporate vast changes are often referred to as software updates or service packs. Updating the software of computers, especially their operating systems, is important to protect the security of the machine and the data it holds.
