Search Engine Marketing can refer to a type of paid online advertising or paid placement. In essence, the owner of a website pays the search engine company to place them in a beneficial location on the organic search results or Search Engine Results Page. Specifically, the payment leads to the placement of the website’s information/link near a website or websites that the search engine has determined to be authoritative on a specific topic.
