Definition of Network

A network is a series of points that have been interconnected through the use of specific communication paths. Each network has the capability of including subnetworks.
Networks can further be identified as local area networks or LANs, wide area networks or WANs, or metropolitan area networks or MANs. LANs, WANs, and MANs identify networks in terms of spatial distance. Additionally, various features are often used to characterize networks. Networks can be identified as public or private according to the individuals who have permission to use them. They can also be identified by the type of data transmission that occurs such as a systems network architecture or a TCP/IP network. The types of physical links utilized to create the network can identify the type of network such as optical fiber, unshielded twisted pair, or coaxial cable. The nature of the connections for the network is often used to refer to networks. This would include dial up, virtual, or dedicated.
