Definition of IP AddressIP stands for Internet Protocol. The IP Address is a set of 12 numbers that are arranged in four sets of three. It is a numeric address that is given to all servers and users on the Internet. When users go online, the Internet Service Provider or ISP assigns the IP Address to the user. For servers, a DNS or Domain Name Server transforms the IP Address into a specific domain name. The domain name is the text that is portrayed in the browser and is interchangeable with the numeric IP Address for the website. The IP Address refers to a specific computer that is linked to the Internet. Therefore, the IP Address can be traced to the user who is attached to it. In fact, the existence of IP Addresses allows one IP device to locate and interact with another. Network devices including routers, computers, switches, servers, fax machines, and more can have unique IP Addresses.
