Definition of Bot

Bots are also known as web robots, Internet bots, and WWW robots. Bots are software applications or programs that are set up to run on a computer 24 hours a day, seven days a week fro the purpose of completing automated tasks. They are designed to perform specific tasks for the computer owner even during those times when the computer owner is not logged in. Bots are also commonly referred to as automatons because they do not need any human input once they are set up.

A bot is typically used to conduct tasks that are highly repetitive in nature or that require a response time that would be faster than a human response time would be. Bots are used in web spidering since they are capable of analyzing and filing information much quicker than humans. Additionally, bots are used in organisation or content access applications for the delivery of media.
