Definition of Anchor Text

An anchor text is also referred to as the label link. It is the visible part of the hyperlink that the user clicks on with his mouse. The specific words that are contained in the anchor text are critical to the page ranking that is achieved through search engines. In most cases, the anchor text is designed to give the user an idea of the relevance of the link. Specifically, the anchor text is usually written to portray background or descriptive information related to the hyperlink’s destination or location.

With some anchor texts, the text used in the hyperlink might be clearly related to the text portrayed in the URL of the website. This is not always the case. However, anchor texts should be viewed as website optimisation tools. Therefore, the keywords used in the anchor text should be carefully selected to bring about good ranking for the webpage or Website
